IOTA and Shimmer Governance Votes March 2024 Results
TL;DR:
We present the community-verified results of the six Governance votes that occurred between March 11,2024 and Mar 29, 2024, in the IOTA and Shimmer networks. While votes for the Grant Committee were clearly expressed, other votes failed to meet the required participation quorum and, therefore, need to be revised.
Recently, decisions were made within the IOTA and Shimmer networks regarding the Tangle Community Treasury and the Tangle Community Grant Committee: you can refresh your memory about the votes here. Let's delve into the outcomes of these governance votes and explore the implications for both networks.
Members of the IOTA and Shimmer communities were asked to vote on three topics, with each topic having a separate vote for the two communities. Each vote had to pass a required participation quorum of 5% of the total achievable votes.
The first topic was whether to continue the Tangle Community Treasury with a revised framework for the 2024 to 2025 term. Both communities voted to accept this resolution, with the IOTA vote [IGP - 0002] achieving 6.4% of the total achievable votes reached and the Shimmer vote [SGP - 0007] achieving 5.02%.
The second topic was for both networks to appoint four grant reviewers each for the Tangle Community Grant Committee. The IOTA community voted ([IGP - 0003) in sufficient numbers – 5.58% of the total achievable votes – resulting in the following appointments to the Grant Committee to represent the IOTA community as grant reviewers: Linus Nauman, Nicole O’Brien, 0xMarcus, and Finanzgoblin - Richard Mediavilla.
However, the same topic put to the Shimmer community (SGP - 0008) received 3.86% of total achievable votes, therefore failing to meet the required participation quorum of 5%, necessitating a new election in the Shimmer network.
The third topic – selecting a Program Lead for the Tangle Community Grant Committee – failed to reach the minimum necessary amount of votes in both communities, with [IGP - 0004] receiving 4.79% of the total achievable votes and SGP - 0009 achieving 4.45%. Therefore, new elections for a Program Lead need to be facilitated.
Conclusions
These results underline that a great deal of thought went into the vote concerning the Tangle Community Treasury. While both the IOTA and Shimmer networks generally signaled approval for sustaining the Grant Committee, the Shimmer network encountered challenges in mobilizing sufficient voter participation to elect committee members. In contrast, IOTA witnessed the successful establishment of a new Grant Committee due to adequate voter turnout.
However, the crucial vote for the Program Lead fell short of achieving quorum support in both networks.
In light of these outcomes, new votes should be held for both the IOTA and Shimmer communities to choose a Program Lead for the Tangle Community Grant, and for the Shimmer community to decide on grant reviewers for the Tangle Community Grant Committee.
