Inviting the IOTA Community to share initiatives so we can make an impact together.

Last year, the IOTA Foundation became a founding member of the International Association of Trusted Blockchain Applications, along with 100 other leading organizations. The initiative is an outgrowth of the EU Blockchain Industry Round Table, a European Commission-hosted group convened to identify the right conditions for DLT to flourish. Since then, the INATBA Social Impact & Sustainability Working Group (SI&S) Working Group has focused on identifying projects and organizations that aim to create positive social and environmental impact with the help of distributed ledger technology (DLT).

The SI&S Working Group prepared a survey in order to map and analyze the “Blockchain for impact” ecosystem and identify the challenges met by projects when using Blockchain to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Combined with preliminary research the SI&S has done already, the insights of the survey will be published in a report later this year and brought to the attention of INATBA members, regulators, policymakers, as well as the broader community.

We invite everybody in our community to participate in the survey and provide insights about your project(s), as well as challenges and opportunities you would like to see brought into the spotlight.

ABOUT INATBA

Officially launched on April 3, 2019, the International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (INATBA) is a multi-stakeholder organization aimed towards bringing together distinct actors within the field of distributed ledger technology (DLT) and fostering an open and collaborative space to advance the development and use of DLT.

Composed of more than 160 member organizations spread across fourteen distinct working groups, alongside governmental bodies and key figures within the academic field, INATBA seeks to promote interoperability, transparent governance, legal certainty, and trust in services enabled by blockchain and DLT.

As one of INATBA’s fourteen working groups, the Social Impact Working Group (SIWG) leverages the vast experience and knowledge of its members to better understand and demonstrate the potential of DLT to address the distinct social challenges currently impacting local and international communities, whether it be climate change, inequality, food, and water waste, etc.

The SIWG has focused its objectives towards exploring and supporting social impact use cases and initiatives, developing guidelines to better shape social impact measurement practices, and offer aid which bridges the gap between social impact initiatives and external support through financial capital.

IOTA FOUNDATION’S INVOLVEMENT IN INATBA

As one of the 106 founding members of INATBA, the IOTA Foundation has and continues to play an active role in supporting INATBA’s and the SIWG’s objectives.

At a representative level, the IOTA Foundation is represented by its current Supervisory Board Member, Dr. Julie Maupin, acting as INATBA’s Chair of the Board of Directors. In 2019, led by Dr. Maupin and members of the IOTA Foundation’s Market Adoption and Regulatory Affairs Department, the IOTA Foundation played a significant role in the organization and success of INATBA’s inaugural conference, “Convergence — The Global Blockchain Congress”, alongside the European Commission, Alastria and the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum.

Outside of this, staff within the IOTA Foundation have actively participated in and contributed to INATBA’s many working groups, in particular, the SIWG. As the IOTA Foundation’s SIWG representative, Mariana de la Roche Wills has contributed to many of the SIWG’s efforts this year, including the INATBA COVID-19 response initiative, the social impact ecosystem mapping exercise and the design of a questionnaire for social impact organizations and projects.
