IOTA Newsletter #22 — Introducing Pollen, Nectar & Honey, Pollen & Hornet releases, UiO & Lidbot collaborations & more.

Pollen marks the beginning of the world’s first truly decentralized, scalable, and fee-less Distributed Ledger, which has been IOTA’s promise since day one. Pollen is the first phase in IOTA’s three-part release strategy that will culminate in our coordinator-less, production-ready network: IOTA 2.0.

Over the last few months, we’ve simplified our naming conventions of IOTA 1.5 (Chrysalis, the intermediate stage of the mainnet before Coordicide) and IOTA 2.0 (Coordicide, the permanent removal of the coordinator node and the launch of a fully decentralized IOTA network) to showcase the seamless transition between these two major protocol upgrades and how they will eventually lead to a coordinator-less, scalable, feeless network. The first of its kind. To follow the current Apoidea naming conventions used for Hornet, Bee, and HoneycombOS, the three stages are named after the three major milestones for the creation of honey: Pollen, Nectar, and Honey.

After almost 5 months of development, we are happy to release Hornet version 0.4.0! Hornet is a lightweight node written in Go and co-developed with the community and IOTA Foundation. This new node software release is the first wave in a series of protocol updates known as Chrysalis (IOTA 1.5) which will lead to a substantial increase in network speed, performance, and usability. The goals of Chrysalis are twofold: to make IOTA enterprise-ready and to create a more seamless transition to our Coordicide implementation (IOTA 2.0).
