John Mattison, MD practiced clinical medicine in internal medicine, critical care, trauma medicine, hyperbaric medicine, primary care, and preventive medicine, prior to becoming the Chief Health Information Officer and Assistant Medical Director at Kaiser Permanente’s largest region, SCAL. He led the largest electronic health record initiative in the US, and founded the international XML standard for healthcare interoperability. He is an active contributor to global research initiatives in both genomics and most recently, neuroscience.

He chairs the eHealth Workgroup of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH), co-leads the national KP virtual care workgroup with oversight of telemedicine, virtual care and remote monitoring, and is a member of the National KP Precision Medicine Advisory Board. Ten years ago, he built a machine learning team that has achieved powerful results mining text data to improve patient safety, quality outcomes, and operational efficiency across the organization.

He consults, keynotes, and gives workshops globally on various topics in healthcare, IT, and health policy, and he mentors scores of digital health startups.

John was a founding board member of the Kaiser Permanente Innovation Board. He has published papers, book chapters (on exponential technologies, innovation, and health policy) and is co-editor of the most current textbook on Health IT. His work has resulted in various national awards and is often cited in leading publications.

John has been and continues to be a pioneer and advocate of Big Data in healthcare as outlined in these CIO, Forbes, MIT and WSJ interviews, as well as this VentureBeat clip.

He is an active innovator in genomics, AI, big data analytics, IOT, blockchain, bioinformatics, mobile healthcare, regulatory policy, telemedicine, privacy, ethics in precision medicine, and is involved in several global not-for-profit initiatives for health and internet access. He is a board member of multiple not-for-profit boards dedicated to improving health, wellness, and resilience of diverse communities, especially for early childhood.

John is passionate about using modern technology to restore ancient wisdom and creating a ‘behavioral symphony for wellness’, and ‘social equity by desing’. He has spoken how seeking a ‘deliberate dyadarity’ will help engineer safety into the AI infrastructure of the future. He is faculty at Singularity University and lectures frequently at universities globally, and is a consultant to the X-Prize. Several keynote addresses are available on youtube.

Distributed ledger technology allows a level of security and data immutability that preserves both privacy and data integrity without a centralized authority. Those services are desperately needed for a digital world increasingly challenged by cyber threats and loss of privacy. Healthcare will be one of the greatest beneficiary of these services when effectively deployed. The list of use cases where a distributed ledger is high value is nearly endless and we’re only constrained by our imagination. I am pleased to join the IOTA to enhance the potential to provide distributed ledger services with less overhead than more traditional tech implementations.

We are naturally thrilled to have John join IOTA as we continue to focus heavily on the intersection between healthcare and IOTA. Having a world leader like this alongside our other in-house eHealth experts like John Halamka and Navin Ramachandran will significantly enhance our ability to drive the exploration and adoption of Distributed Ledger technology in improving cutting edge healthcare. His full bio and list of publications is simply too comprehensive to list in an exhaustive manner in this introduction. This is a man who has and continue to achieve lifetimes worth of results each decade. Give him a warm welcome!
