Wolfgang Welz is a researcher and software developer with areas of interest in combinatorial optimization, graph algorithms and network design.

He studied mathematics and computer science at the Technische Universität Berlin.

After obtaining a Master’s degree in each of these fields in 2010 and 2011, he worked as a research assistant at the TU Berlin in algorithmic discrete mathematics.

In 2014, Wolfgang obtained his PhD. He researched, designed and developed solution methods for combined routing and scheduling problems motivated by the automotive industry.
After his PhD he worked as a software developer in a small spin-off company of the Zuse Institute Berlin focussing on optimization technology for the telecommunications industry.

He came into contact with the IOTA community while designing and programming the first working implementation of IOTA on the Ledger Nano S hardware wallet with a team of three other community developers.

Operating at the intersection of IoT and DLT, the IOTA technology and vision are perfectly positioned for the future of the Internet. Since both of these fields are still in their infancy, researching and developing in that direction will be especially challenging.

The Tangle provides new and fascinating mathematical questions and represents a future-shaping application, bringing together many aspects of my research interests in graph theory and algorithms. By supporting efficient simulations as well as theoretical analyses, I am very excited to be driving these efforts forward.

Wolfgang has been a valued member of our community for quite some time. He has already demonstrated his development prowess, and now we look forward to his contribution to the research department. Give him a warm welcome!
